Assessment of the suitability of pineapple waste as feedstock for vermicomposting CIGR Journal
Miito, Gilbert John; Komakech, Allan John; Zziwa, Ahamada; Kiggundu, Nicholas; Kambugu, Robert.
Declining soil fertility is a challenge to sustainable agricultural production in sub-Saharan Africa with a case of Uganda. However, the large volumes of agricultural waste generated from pineapples can be converted into soil conditioners through vermicomposting. by the use of earthworms. Several types of agricultural waste have been studied extensively as vermicompost feedstock, but little work exists on pineapple waste. The objective of this study was to investigate the suitability of pineapple waste for vermicomposting. To achieve this, an assessment of the physicochemical properties of fresh, pre-composted pineapple waste, and the resultant vermicompost, and determination of the optimal feeding rate and stocking density were performed.  The study...

Combined effects of water quality and stocking density on welfare and growth of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Labbe, Laurent; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Severe, Armelle; Le Roux, Annick; Le Delliou, Herve; Quemener, Loic.
An 84-day experiment assessed the combined effects of two fresh water quality levels (H: 1.71 +/- 0.15 mg O(2)l(-1) and 0.28 +/- 0.01 mg l(-1) total ammonia nitrogen (T-AN), L: 5.15 +/- 0.07 mg O2l(-1) and 0.54 +/- 0.01 mg T- AN l(-1)) and 3 stabilized stocking densities: 24.8 +/- 0.2, 74.2 +/- 0.5 and 120.0 +/- 0.9 kg m(-3)) on rainbow trout. Fish were fed using demand feeders with rewards proportional to stocking density. Mass increase was significantly affected by water quality and stocking density, being highest in H water and the lowest at 120 kg m(-3). There was no significant difference in final weight between 25 and 74 kg m(-3), but at 120 kg m(-3) it was 27% and 19% lower in H and L water respectively than at 25 kg m(-3). Feed intake (FI) from day...

Effect of Stocking Density on the Performance and Immunity of 1- to 14-d- Old Broiler Chicks Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Qaid,M; Albatshan,H; Shafey,T; Hussein,E; Abudabos,AM.
ABSTRACT The current experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of stocking density (SD) on the performance and immunity of 1- to 14-d-old broilers. A total of 1836 one-day-old Cobb 500 broilers were housed at four different SD (30, 60, 90 and 120 chicks/m2). Body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were estimated on d 2, 5, 8, 11 and 14. Relative lymphoid organ weights, maternal antibody titers against IBV, IBD and NDV, and stress indicators were estimated on d 3, 6, 9 and 12.The results indicated that age significantly (p<0.001) affected the performance and immunity of broiler chicks. Stocking density significantly (p<0.001) affected the performance and physiological stress indicators of broiler chicks, but not...

Effects of temperature, stocking density and farming conditions on fin damage in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Le Bayon, Nicolas.
This paper presents a non invasive, rapid and reliable way to quantitatively assess fin erosion in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). The method is based on a visual assessment of fin profile and area loss of all fins except the anterior dorsal, on a scale from 0 to 4 in comparison with a perfect fin. The effects of stocking density (SD) and temperature on fin damage were investigated under experimental conditions (100-250 g fish). Over a 4-month period, mean erosion index (mean erosion level of all fins) was 10 times higher at 120 than at 20 kg m(-3), where most fins were undamaged. Damage was also dependent on time and oxygen concentration (35% lower at 53% O-2 saturation than at 105%). Fin condition was also affected by temperature: mean erosion index was...

Evaluation of strain, dietary energy level and stocking density on broiler feathering Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Moreira,J; Mendes,AA; Garcia,RG; Garcia,EA; Roça,RO; Nääs,IA; Dalanezi,JA; Pelícia,K.
This study evaluated the effects of strain, stocking density and dietary energy level on the feathering of broiler chickens. Four trials were carried out between September 2000 and April 2002. There were 10,685 broiler chicks from the strains Ross 308, Cobb 500, Hybro PG, Hubbard, MPK, and Isa Vedette. The bids were reared at stocking densities varying between 10 and 16 birds/m² and were given diets containing different metabolizable energy levels. Broiler feathering was evaluated either by atrributing scores from 1 to 10 to feather covering along the thigh and back (visual inspection), or by determining the percentage weight of the feathers at 28 and 42 days of age. Increasing rearing densities resulted in poorer feathering, mainly if 12 or 13 birds/m²...

Grow-out mariculture techniques in tropical waters: A case study of problems and solutions in Hong Kong. ArchiMer
Wu, R; Lee, J.
Raft culture is practised and trash fish is being used as feed in Hong Kong. Culture space is limited and most of the culture sites are over-crowded. Food conversion ratio is poor (about 10-15), grow-out mortality is high (30-50%) and fish kills caused by oxygen depletions, algal blooms and red tides occur frequently. Disease and water pollution are also problems.

Influences of dietary crude protein and stocking density on growth performance and body measurements of ostrich chicks Anais da ABC (AABC)
MAHROSE,KHALID M.; EL-HACK,MOHAMED E. ABD; AMER,SHYMAA A..
Abstract: Thirty-six African Black ostrich chicks were used to investigate the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) levels (180, 210 and 240 g/kg), stocking density (4.5 and 3 m2/bird) and their interactions. A factorial arrangement was used to examine the impact of treatments on growth performance and body measurements of ostrich chicks during 2 to 10 weeks of the age. Results indicated that factors studied did not change growth performance traits. The highest value of protein efficiency ratio was observed in ostrich chicks fed diet contained 240 g/kg diet. Birds fed diet contained 240 g CP /kg diet and kept at stocking density of 3 m2 per bird had numerically the highest protein efficiency ratio. Shank girth and tibiotarsus length decreased with...

La mytiliculture dans la Manche. Biomasses en élevage et croissance de Mytilus edulis L. ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Joly, Jean-pierre; Le Gagneur, Eric; Ruelle, Francois.
This report describes the mussel Mytilus edulis sampling stock strategy developed to carry out stock assesments along the French Normandy coastline between 1989 and 1993. The overall totalnetweight reached 13,992 metric tons in 1993 with 27% precision level. Simultaneously, a growth study was carried out on 36 experimental sites to estimate overall variability. Individual total weight varied from 6.6 to 12 g at rearing cycle completion. An empirical management model conceming the Western Cotentin rearing areas was proposed and explained 68% of total weight variance. Based on a stepwise multilinear relationship, the model linked overall growth performance to local stocking density, tidal distribution, and distance from the main runoffs inputs. It aims to...

Optimal Stocking Density for Dual-Purpose Winter Wheat Production AgEcon
Kaitibie, Simeon; Epplin, Francis M.; Brorsen, B. Wade; Horn, Gerald W.; Krenzer, Eugene G., Jr.; Paisley, Steven I..
Dual-purpose winter wheat production is an important economic enterprise in the southern Great Plains of the United States. Because of the complex interactions involved in producing wheat grain and beef gain from a single crop, stocking density is an important decision. The objective of the research is to determine the stocking density that maximizes expected net returns from dual-purpose winter wheat production. Statistical tests rejected a conventional linear-response plateau function in favor of a linear-response stochastic plateau function. The optimal stocking density of 1.48 steers/ha (0.60 steers/acre) is 19% greater with a stochastic than with a nonstochastic plateau.
